Canada immigration from Nigeria should begin with a comparison of the applicant’s profile and the intended outcome. Some programs accept applications for permanent residence from abroad. Others provide temporary work or study permission, with a separate assessment needed for a later permanent route.

Canadian nationality-neutral program criteria still require individual evidence. Age, language results, education, skilled experience, family circumstances and regional plans can affect eligibility and competitiveness. Savings or a visitor visa do not provide a general settlement entitlement.

Main residence routes

Route Who it may suit What is examined
Express Entry An applicant eligible under a managed skilled-worker program Language, experience, education and selection under current rules.
Provincial nomination An applicant matching a province’s open stream Regional criteria, occupation, connections or employer support where required.
Employer-supported regional immigration A candidate with a qualifying offer Program, employer and community requirements.
Temporary employment A person eligible for a work permit An employer-specific route or a recognised open-permit basis.
Study An admitted student with credible funding Study permission and separate assessment of post-graduation opportunities.
Family sponsorship A person with a qualifying relationship Eligibility of both the sponsor and sponsored applicant.

Step-by-step plan

  1. Record age, qualifications, actual work duties, experience, language ability and family circumstances.
  2. Compare a small set of relevant permanent or temporary routes and confirm current eligibility.
  3. Prepare accepted language results, education assessment and experience evidence where required.
  4. Check selection and stream availability; distinguish a profile from an invitation to apply.
  5. Submit truthful evidence and follow biometrics and medical instructions.
  6. Complete the approved arrival or status-confirmation steps and track any temporary-permit restrictions.

Document checklist

  • Passport and civil documents for included family members.
  • An accepted language test and foreign education assessment where required.
  • Employment evidence documenting duties, dates and required details of the experience.
  • Funds, police certificates, translations and other records from the personalised checklist.
  • Employer, nomination, admission or sponsor documents for the applicable route.

Work, study and budget planning

Canada immigration requirements are program-specific. Express Entry manages several skilled-worker programs; qualifying for one is different from obtaining a competitive Comprehensive Ranking System score. An applicant may enter the pool without receiving an invitation in the next round.

The phrase Canada skilled worker visa is not a single official category. Identify whether the intended route is permanent residence through a skilled-worker program, provincial selection or temporary employment. For foreign experience, confirm the accepted language test, educational assessment and evidence of duties.

Choose an occupation classification by the work actually performed. Employer references should describe duties, dates, hours and other required facts accurately. A job title alone may not demonstrate qualifying experience. Explain gaps and inconsistencies before submission rather than altering documents.

Provincial programs have their own intake arrangements and requirements. A nomination may depend on a job, local experience or another link, and the applicant must genuinely intend to settle in the nominating region. Atlantic and community-based routes can involve designated employers and additional regional conditions.

A Canada work permit from Nigeria requires a lawful basis for the applicable permit. Employer-specific permission and an open work permit are different. Open permits are limited to eligible situations; they are not a general option available merely because someone wants to find a job after arrival.

Study should be assessed as an education decision as well as an immigration plan. DLI status does not mean every course is eligible for a post-graduation work permit. Verify the institution, program, applicable language and field-of-study conditions before paying tuition. Neither admission nor graduation guarantees permanent status.

A genuine job offer can still matter for some programs and work permits. However, the additional CRS points for job offers were removed on 25 March 2025. Old calculators or promises to buy an offer for ranking points should not drive the plan.

Quebec has separate selection arrangements for several categories. A federal or another province’s checklist should not be treated as the complete Quebec procedure. Match the intended destination with the correct selection route and a genuine settlement plan rather than treating every Canadian region as administratively interchangeable.

Preparing for everyday life

Prepare a budget in Canadian dollars for tests, credential assessment, translation, government fees, medical examination, travel and settlement. Required proof of funds and practical living costs are separate questions. A family needs a realistic allowance for deposits, healthcare arrangements and children’s expenses.

Follow the instructions issued for biometrics, medical checks and passport-related steps. Check which facilities and submission channels are available to applicants resident in Nigeria. An online application does not remove the need to complete requested in-person procedures.

Keep financial evidence consistent with the declared source of funds. Account movements, gifts or transfers may require explanation. Do not rely on temporarily borrowed money where the program requires funds genuinely available to the applicant.

Professional licensing is separate from immigration approval. Regulated occupations can require provincial registration before practice. Compare the local employment market, language expectations and licensing pathway before selecting a city or assuming an immediate salary.

Checks before filing

  • The stated purpose matches the activities the category permits.
  • The host and the source of funds can be verified.
  • Nationality-specific entry rules and consular jurisdiction have been checked.
  • The budget covers housing, documentation and a period without income.

Permanent residence and citizenship

Canada permanent residence is distinct from a work permit, study permit and visitor status. Temporary permission does not automatically become PR. An applicant who studies or works first must still meet the criteria of an available permanent route.

After approval, follow IRCC’s instructions for confirming status and travelling. A permanent resident’s obligations, the expiry of a PR card and the validity of a travel document are different matters. Track absence and documentation instead of treating the card date as the entire legal position.

Citizenship is a later, separate application with current eligibility requirements. A course, employer or immigration representative cannot guarantee a future passport. Family sponsorship also has specific relationship and sponsor criteria; a friend’s invitation is not an alternative.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing eligibility, CRS ranking and an invitation to apply.
  • Paying tuition without checking the exact program’s PGWP eligibility.
  • Buying employment records or a job offer.
  • Relying on old CRS rules or closed programs.
  • Treating a temporary permit as a guarantee of permanent residence.

Frequently asked questions

Must an applicant first work in Canada?

Not for every route. Some programs allow eligible applicants with foreign experience to apply for permanent residence from abroad.

Does an Express Entry profile guarantee selection?

No. Eligibility, ranking, invitation and final approval are distinct.

Is every Canadian course eligible for a PGWP?

No. Verify the exact program and all applicable conditions before committing funds.

Does every route need a job offer?

No. The role of an offer depends on the selected program or work-permit type.
