A Thailand visa from Nigeria should be selected for the actual purpose. Visiting, remote work, local employment and study have different requirements. A long visa-validity period does not necessarily permit an uninterrupted stay for that entire period.
Thai visa and entry instructions must be checked for the Nigerian passport and the applicant’s place of residence. A Russian visitor’s visa exemption or another nationality’s arrival arrangement should not be assumed to apply.
Choosing the basis
| Category | Who it concerns | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| DTV | An applicant with an eligible remote-work or other recognised purpose | Category evidence, funds and the conditions of each stay. |
| LTR | An applicant meeting a BOI group’s requirements | The category-specific income, employment or other criteria. |
| Local work | A person with a suitable employer | The relevant visa and employment authorisation. |
| Study, family or retirement | An applicant with a qualifying basis | Admission, family evidence or the applicable retirement conditions. |
Preparation sequence
- Check entry rules for a Nigerian passport.
- Select the category matching the intended activity.
- Prepare purpose and financial evidence.
- Apply through the competent mission and official system from the permitted location.
- Track the authorised stay, reporting and extensions after entry.
Evidence for the selected basis
- Passport and evidence for the actual visa basis.
- For DTV, records supporting an eligible purpose rather than a generic tourist file.
- For study or retirement, evidence for the selected category and conditions.
- For LTR, records for the applicant group; check local-employment authorisation separately.
Basis and sequence of steps
Thailand visa requirements for Nigerian citizens should be confirmed through the competent representation and official portal. Check supporting records, financial evidence and any additional requests. Do not submit a tourism checklist for a genuine employment or residence plan.
The Thailand DTV visa has its own purposes and stay conditions. Verify the evidence supporting remote work or another eligible category. It should not be described as unrestricted permission to join a local employer.
Study requires a real programme and the required participation. Local employment needs the relevant work authorisation. Family and retirement routes have separate criteria; the name of a long-stay visa alone does not establish eligibility.
LTR and paid long-stay membership arrangements are distinct options. Compare rights, renewal conditions and cost, not only the advertised validity. Neither should automatically be treated as permanent residence.
BOI’s LTR instructions discuss work-permit steps for employment with a Thai entity. They distinguish Work-From-Thailand Professionals as remote workers for an overseas employer. Identify the actual category and employer before deciding what work arrangements apply; the LTR label alone does not settle this question.

Budget and obligations after moving
The cost of living in Thailand depends on the city, housing area and household. Include deposits, healthcare, insurance, transport and documentation. Seasonal accommodation prices or a tourist budget may not describe year-round family expenses.
Track visa validity and the authorised stay separately. Address reporting and other local obligations depend on the case. Keep the entry and extension records rather than assuming future entries will always be available on the same terms.
The official e-Visa system states that applicants must be outside Thailand. Check the competent mission and current filing instructions. A local extension is a different process from a new application through that portal.
Checks before filing
- Separate visa validity from permitted stay after entry.
- Identify purpose, application location and competent representation.
- Compare DTV, LTR, study and retirement by conditions.
- Assess local employment separately from permission to remain.
Later status and citizenship
Permanent residence requires its own eligibility assessment. A long-stay visa is not an automatic route to permanent status or citizenship. Property ownership and course enrolment should not be advertised as passport guarantees.
Overseas income also requires a separate tax assessment. The immigration category and tax residence do not answer the same legal question. Plan what happens if the employment, course or family basis ends.
Common mistakes
- Buying a long-validity visa as a promise of permanent residence.
- Using nominal study without genuine participation.
- Treating DTV as permission for any Thai job.
- Transferring one LTR category’s benefits to every holder.
Frequently asked questions
Does visa validity equal the continuous allowed stay?
No. Review the permission after entry and any extension conditions.
Does DTV authorise any local job?
No general employment entitlement should be assumed; assess the actual activity under its rules.
Can the e-Visa application be made inside Thailand?
The official portal requires the applicant to be outside Thailand.
What should be compared across LTR categories?
The applicant group, income and activity evidence, employer, family conditions and work arrangements. Sharing a programme name does not mean every category has identical rights.
