Business immigration is a general term for routes connected with entrepreneurship, self-employment or developing a project abroad. It is not a single international programme. Company incorporation, permission to conduct an activity and permission to reside are separate questions.

For Nigerian applicants, eligibility depends on the destination’s rules, the proposed project and the evidence supporting the application. Company ownership alone does not establish a right to relocate.

Business visa or residence permission?

A business visa may allow a short visit for meetings, negotiations, trade events or other specified activities. It should not be treated as permission to settle or operate a local enterprise.

A UK business visa for a short visit needs to be distinguished from permission to settle. The UK Standard Visitor rules provide an example of this distinction. They identify permitted business activities, including meetings and negotiations. A visit to discuss a contract is different from permission to run a business locally. The immigration category determines the permitted activity, rather than the wording of an invitation letter.

Entrepreneurial residence routes

A registration certificate shows that an entity exists. It does not, by itself, establish the owner’s right to live in the destination or undertake every form of work there. Those questions depend on the applicable residence route.

Germany’s self-employment route, for example, considers economic interest or regional demand, the expected economic effect of the business and secured financing. A separate provision covers freelance professional activity. The legal category matters even when both applicants describe themselves as self-employed.

Comparisons therefore need to distinguish between incorporation requirements, permission to perform the proposed activity and immigration eligibility. Their sequence is determined by the destination’s procedure.

Innovation-based routes and programme names

Startup routes may assess innovation, viability and growth potential. A newly registered retail or consulting business is not necessarily an innovative project. Some programmes involve assessment by an authorised organisation.

The phrase “UK entrepreneur visa” is a search term, not sufficient identification of a current route. The current route discussed here is the UK Innovator Founder visa. It requires endorsement and assessment of innovation, viability and scalability. These are UK conditions, not a universal checklist for every destination.

Project evidence and financial records

A business plan explains the product, customers, market, operating costs and revenue assumptions. Forecast sales are not evidence that financing is already available. If the project involves equipment, premises and employees, its funding explanation should account for those expenses.

For planning purposes, evidence can be grouped into personal records, project documents and financial records. This is an organisational method, not an official application checklist. The responsible authority determines the evidence required for the selected category.

Names, currencies, amounts and dates should be consistent across the file. Business capital and personal maintenance funds can serve different purposes. Nigerian bank records or company documents should be prepared in the form accepted by the destination; translation and authentication requirements depend on the particular procedure.

Costs and continuing conditions

The budget may include application fees, translations, professional services, licences and running expenses. There is no universal minimum investment covering all countries. A programme’s published financial threshold is not necessarily the complete cost of relocation or operating the business.

Initial approval and renewal deserve separate assessment. Relevant questions include the required business activity, reporting obligations and the consequences of a project ending. The UK Innovator Founder route, for example, includes meetings with the endorsing body to assess business progress.

Conditions for dependants, permanent residence and naturalisation also require separate consideration. Tax residence and immigration permission are different matters.

Questions and answers

What is a business visa?

The term commonly refers to permission for specified business visits. Permitted activities depend on the destination and visa category.

Does incorporating a company provide residence?

Not automatically. A separate immigration basis and its requirements must be established.

Is every new company suitable for a startup route?

No. A programme may require innovation or other project characteristics beyond recent incorporation.

Can family members accompany an entrepreneur?

This depends on the route and the conditions for dependants, including any rights to work.

Does entrepreneurial residence guarantee citizenship?

No. Permanent residence and naturalisation have separate eligibility rules.
